Week 5: Reflecting on Teacher Resources

As a new relativley new student teacher who has yet to complete a practicum, the idea of creating lesson and unit plans, resources, etc., seems like a daunting and time-consuming concept. When in classes and reviewing the BC Curriculum, generating creative and original plans with a universal design for learners is discussed as the only option. However, in this week’s class, the discussion of teacher resources and online tools eased my anxieties. I concluded that I can create personalized plans, whilst incorporating outside resources to bolster my original and creative ideas.

Some of the resources discussed include: Focused Education, World Book Online, Live-it Earth, and Arctic Fox. What resource was most enticing to me was ‘Live-it’, as it seamlessly connects curricular concepts and ideas. This will be a great resource for when I begin my practicum and further in my professional career. The challenge and games section, especially, will be exciting for the students, while simultaneously easing my workload; this is similar to ‘Click-view’, another resource mentioned during class.

Having access to these professionally made resources, moreover, will protect me professionally, as acceptance of certain language, themes, etc., changes daily. Knowing that these resources are teacher- and peer-reviewed and up-to-date offers reassurance. Conversely, teaching a concept from a site like Pinterest that could be outdated could perpetuate misinformation, bias, or offend others.

I did some research into my own teacher resources, which I believe could be useful to myself, and my peer student-teachers:

Kajsa, thanks for the reflections and the new links. Those are some of the items you might want to post and share in the discussion forum coming up in Week 6. You can post there now if you like, and then add your thoughts about the workshops in a different post.
